Canada-based Horizon Aircraft has secured a $2 million grant from the Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Technology (INSAT) to fund Project CRYSTAL – an all-weather eVTOL initiative.
Backed by $10.5 million in funding, the project aims to develop and test a vertical propulsion system capable of operating in conditions that typically ground helicopters. Horizon’s hybrid eVTOL, the Cavorite X7, will serve as the test platform.
The first phase of Project CRYSTAL will explore advanced ice detection and protective coatings developed by the University of Toronto, while the second phase, supported by the Flight Test Centre of Excellence (3C), will test the technologies on the aircraft.
Phil Cole, Vice President of Business Development at 3C, said the research could benefit not only eVTOLs but “any traditional fixed-wing or rotary-wing air vehicle” operating in climates prone to ice build-up.
Most helicopters are restricted from flying in known icing conditions due to the risk of ice forming on rotor blades or in engine inlets, which can lead to power loss and reduced stability. Horizon’s goal is to enable safe flight in these environments, opening opportunities for critical missions such as medical evacuation and disaster relief.
Horizon Aircraft CEO Brandon Robinson said an all-weather version of the Cavorite X7 could cut emissions significantly if deployed at scale, estimating that replacing just four percent of the global helicopter fleet could reduce annual CO2 emissions by 2.6 billion pounds.
Robinson added that the Cavorite X7 is designed to operate at up to 75% lower cost per kilometre than a helicopter, while moving more passengers or cargo at higher speeds.
Horizon plans to certify the Cavorite X7 for Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI), a rare certification among both helicopters and early eVTOLs.
The NASDAQ-listed company’s Cavorite X7 is a hybrid-eVTOL aircraft that blends vertical lift capability with a conventional winged flight profile. It’s designed for dual-use applications including commercial regional air mobility, cargo, medevac, and even defence-sector missions.
